From a Township Puppy to a Cognac

When I worked at the Animal Hospital in Stellenbosch that is also how I met my friends from the Animal Welfare. So one day I´m joining them to go pick up a bitch and her litter from a township in Klapsmuts. The bitch had 8 little puppies, who still had their eyes closed, as they were only 10 days old. All, were put to sleep at the Animal Hospital, immediately after picking them up. It broke my heart to see that those little sould who haven´t even opened their eyes to the world yet to see it, will never be able to and had go back to ever lasting sleep. It was just 2 weeks after I adopted Chico, I don´t know what got into me, but I decided, today, one of them is going to get a second chance.
So that is puppy, I raised him from when he was 10 days old, feeding him with the bottle and having to get up every 2 hours during the night. That is when I decided that children would not be on my list for a very long time! Puppy had a lot of fleas in the beginning which we exterminated with our good old friend Frontline. With the fleas, the worms were several and he had to be dewormed 5 times until he was finally rid of them!
One day I in panic called the vet, because Puppy´s belly was so big and swollen after feeding him, that I though he might burst! The vet said it is normal and I have nothing to worry. The Christmas time we spent in Kuils River and I ran out of milk supplement, in panic I went to every single vet in the area, and unbelievably none had puppy milk supplement. So we phoned the SPCA and they gave me a formula of condensed milk, egg yold, honey and cotliver oil, which Puppy just loved.
As puppy grew older he also got a little more naughty. Chico was a great Dad to him, they played so nicely.
Unfortunately I am living in a flat and puppy grow and didn´t want to stop growing. So one day I decided the time has come to look for a family for him. When I took him in the beginning it was clear that I would not be able to keep 2 dogs. I put up a nice little poster at the Animal Hospital and one day I got a call from Annelie. She said my puppy looks like a Rhodesian Ridgeback and since their´s had just died from Billary they are looking for a puppy. As paranoid as I was about my puppy finding a good home I insisted on seeing where he would stay
Well, I couldn´t have hit it better. His new home was going to be Overgaauw Wine Estate. I was so happy that he would stay in such a nice place, but also heart broken to have to say good bye to my boy. Annelie gave me two bottles of wine, which I still haven´t opened today. They are special to me, as they will always remind me of that little 10 day old puppy, looking like a guinea pig, whom I raised and gave all my love to, just like a mum.
A few month later I started working at the Stellenbosch Tourism Beareau as a part time job, when I went on a wine tour with Gudrun. Little did I know, we would go to Overgaauw! And there he was Cognac, all grown up....and he even recognized me! From a township puppy who was certainly dead, to a glamorous wine estate dog, if that is not the story of a dog´s life!
