Miracles of a Kayamandi Mama

This story happened in Dezember 2005 when I worked at the Animal Hospital in Stellenbosch. Two guys from Kayamandi came into the vet, pushing a shoprite trolley into the clinic. The dog inside it was highly pregnant and injured. Apparently she was lying in the road for a couple of days, after being hit by a car. Fortunately those two guys could not watch her suffer and brought her in a trolley all the way from Kayamandi.
The vet wanted to put her to sleep, as in her wound of the broken leg, worms and other parasites were eating the already rotting flesh. The vet declared, there is nothing to do for her, the leg is lost! The two guys insisted they didn´t want her to be put to sleep and promised to bring the R1000 for the operation the next day. Well, as expected they didn´t come the next day and the vet could not put her to sleep without the permission of the owner. So she got a lot of pain killers and antibiotics and was awaiting the birth of her puppies at the vet clinic.
I felt so sorry for this poor dog that I went to visit her every day to give her some love. Eventually one day there were tiny little puppies in her kennel. To my sad surprise a few days later all of them were gone, as they were very weak and she didn´t care for them, so they died. Another weak and a half or so later, she was still there, humping around outside and wagging her tail when she saw me at the gate. Her open leg was closed up put extremly deformed, as the fracture was never fixed. The happy ending of the story is that Dr.Franken decided to adopt her and give her a loving home! He amputated the deformed leg and has now a new 3-legged family member.
